San Diego Beaches

San Diego – miles and miles of superb beaches. How could you possibly pick a favorite? Well, we've managed to narrow down our list of personal darlings to these four beaches – check out the best of the best:
Moonlight State Beach
Moonlight State Beach, a half mile from the downtown community of Encinitas , is our preferred beach for picnics with family and friends. You can bring your lunch and eat at one of the many picnic tables or cook it at the fire rings. Moonlight State Beach is equipped with restrooms, public parking and lifeguards. There is also a playground for the kids and several volleyball courts. You don't even need a car to get to this beach, since the Amtrak "Coaster" train station is only five blocks away. Bicycle riding is very popular on this stretch of coastline and leisurely riders mix with the professionals training for races and triathlons.
Black's Beach

Black's Beach is a two mile long, sandy strip situated at the base of majestic cliffs up to 300 feet high. It's famous for its' northern parts where clothing is optional. Water activity is essentially unregulated, and especially the southern end of the beach is very popular among the surfers. In addition to water sports, Black's beach gives you the opportunity to try hang gliding, paragliding and remote controlled gliders. The impressing cliffs of Black's Beach are not only a plus though as they make it a bit tricky to access the beach. The safest and easiest way to reach the Black's beach is to park at the Torrey Pines State Beach or Reserve lots and then walk south along the shoreline, but this path can sometimes be impractical due to high tides or surf blocking your way.
Pacific Beach
This is not a secluded beach for romantic getaways or undisturbed sunbathing. This is the beach were all the action is. During the summer, Pacific Beach is always crammed with people sunbathing, listening to music, picnicking, playing volleyball, competing in athletic events and even getting married. The beach has separate water areas reserved for swimming and surfing. Parallel to the entire beach is a boardwalk where you can rollerblade, ride your bike, go jogging etc. Lifeguards are present every day, not only during the summer, and you can find public restrooms and showers at the lifeguard station located at the foot of Grand Avenue. Containers for beach fires are generally provided during the summer.
Sunset Cliffs
Okay, technically this is not even a beach, but who cares when you can bask in the sun on mega sandstone cliffs while watching huge waves crash far beneath you in the most dramatic way. If you're really blessed by the sea gods you might even catch sight of a California Gray Whale making its annual migration from the Bering Sea to Baja California. There are no lifeguards at Sunset Cliffs, but portable restrooms are available and a public shower can be found at the corner of Ladera Street and Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. If you feel like making your way down to the waters edge to cool your feet in the ocean, wait until low tide and be careful. If a trail doesn't feel safe, find one that does.
