Welcome to Coronado Island!

Fact: Coronado Island is one of my favorite places in the entire world.

Every time I cross the Coronado Bay Bridge, I can feel my anticipation building awaiting the crest in the bridge.

Once that point is reached, I'm always struck by the view I have of the island. It just lays there in front of me, calling out with its greenery, long streches of white sand, and beautiful structures.

Crossing that bridge sometimes feels like going into a whole different world--one in which everything is perfect, calm, and clean. I'm not sure if you can understand what I mean, but visiting that island is wholly refreshing in its contrast to, well, anywhere else.

Coronado may be as close to heaven on earth as is possible, and I mean that quite seriously.

For Beach-goers

There are several options for hitting the shores of Coronado Island. Any way you go you're going to be well set, but here's a little information to help you find your best fit.

Central Beach

Coronado's Central Beach is one of my favorite places. Period.

An expanse of fine, white sand plus a peaceful atmosphere adds up to a great situation.

It's the place to go if you want a little space to yourself and some relaxation time.

Conversely, the ocean is so calm and the beach is so large that it's a great place to take kids too. This was my first pick for beach trips with my brothers when they were small for that reason.

The versatility of this beach and its closeness to Orange Avenue (Coronado's main drag) make it one of the best beaches in San Diego in my opinion.

Silver Strand

Silver Strand is actually the strip of land that prevents Coronado from being a true island. This beach stretches a couple of miles between the island -like center of Coronado and the mainland at Imperial Beach.

Basically, Silver Strand is a haven for campers and a spacious getaway for day-trippers (there is a ton of beach here).

It's a fun place to spend a day--easy to bike to, good for relaxing on, and usually a good place to see a few dolphins as well.

Dog Beach

Third is a place for man and man's best friend. Dog Beach is about a mile north of the Hotel del Coronado.

Fun with the Family

The Beaches

I would say Coronado's beaches are the most kid-friendly in San Diego.

The Central Beach in particular is awesome for children. There's plenty of sand for running around in, a calm sea, and a very clean environment.

I loved going here as a kid, and I realized how perect it is from the perspective of an adult through taking my younger brothers here. Kids can run around and play as they like and it's super easy to keep an eye on them.

Tidelands Park

Coronado is a great place for a fun day out with the family. Whether it's a day for building sand castles on the shore, having a picnic, cruising bicycles around town, taking a ride on the Coronado Ferry, or flying kites at Tidelands Park.

I have many fond memories of doing all of these things with my family, and belive me when I say that from a child's perspective, from the moment you cross the Coronado Bay Bridge, the place is absolutley magical.

A Few Coronado Attractions

Coronado is really a quiet kind of place, but it's one of the most beautiful, laid back environments you can possibly find. However, there are a few stand out attractions.

Hotel del Coronado

I would be surprised if you haven't heard of the Hotel del Coronado.

Largely, this resort is consiedered the jewel of Coronado Island. One day I would like to stay here, just for the heck of it because it is so grand and beautiful.

Even if you're not a guest though, the hotel has a ton of shopping options, a few places to grab a meal, and a ton of history too (it was built in 1888!).

Downtown San Diego

There's plenty to do during the day: from biking to jogging to golfing, shopping to strolling, swimming to soaking up the sun. The nightlife is quiet though, but those who want some more excitement can easily get to downtown San Diego, which is just across the Coronado Bay Bridge.
