La Jolla Half Marathon

Each April a date is set for the La Jolla Half Marathon and thousands of runners come out to run one of the most scenic races in the country.

The race starts at the Del Mar Fairgrounds bright and early in the morning. From there runners head west, then continue parallel to the ocean until Torrey Pines State Beach.

La Jolla Cove La Jolla Cove, the location of the finish line

This next stretch is widely regarded as the most difficult part of the course. Runners take on a little over a mile of uphill terrain through Torrey Pines State Park before reaching level ground.

The race continues on in front of UC San Diego before heading downhill on La Jolla Shores Drive and bringing runners to the boardwalk at La Jolla Shores.

By this point there's less than two miles to go. This last stage runs through downtown La Jolla until the finish at La Jolla Cove.

My Take on the La Jolla Half Marathon

This race along with the Carlsbad Half Marathon and America's Finest City Half Marathon make up what is known as the Triple Crown. The Triple Crown series is known for grouping three of the most fun, beautiful races in the counrty together, and the reputation is completely warranted.

I ran all three races last year and this was by far my favorite. Hands down, this is the most gorgeous, challenging and rewarding course.

Me after finishing the La Jolla Half Marathon Me after the finish

Even through the "hard part" of the race (climbing the hill through Torrey Pines State Park), there is so much positive energy and such gorgeous scenery that I mark it as one of the best parts of the course.

The last stretch before the finish is incredible as well; cruising into beautiful La Jolla Cove with the cheering crowd was the perfect way to end that run.

I would recommend this race to anyone who's up to the challenge.

La Jolla in general is a great place to run, so if the La Jolla Half Marathon doesn't quite sound like it's for you, you can always head to La Jolla Shores and run on the sand instead.
