Pacific Beach, California has one of the most interesting atmospheres out of all the beaches in San Diego; although it attracts a young crowd and has a very active feel, it somehow maintains a very relaxed vibe as well.

During the summer, the sand at Pacific Beach can get pretty crowded. It's a good place to go if you like being around people. (If you like a little more space you might want to travel south to Coronado.)
Most people choose to just lay back and relax on their towels, but there are also a good handful who go for some paddle ball, frisbee, jogging, and more. The combination of relaxation and activity is what makes this beach unique, and fun.

Surfers, boogie boarders, swimmers, and skim boarders alike can enjoy the surf in Pacific Beach.
Generally speaking the swells at Pacific Beach are good enough to attract a host of surfers, which is a testiment to the place in itself.
Although it can get crowded, especially in the summertime, there is some pretty decent surf.
As far as swimming goes, Pacific Beach is one of my favorites for getting in the water. It's a good place to splash around, or simply float. Warm water, soft sand, and good waves are really all you need, after all.

The main drag in Pacific Beach is Garnet Avenue, which runs straight off of Crystal Pier.
If you're feeling like shopping or getting a meal, you will find more than enough options to satisfy you simply by traversing this street.
