Latin Chef: A Great Peruvian Restaurant in San Diego

Here's this restaurant in a nutshell. Specifics are further down the page. Enjoy!

Cuisine: Peruvian and Brazilian

Restaurant Feel:Laid Back

Price Range: Most meals cost between $10 and $20

Address:1142 Garnet Avenue San Diego, CA 92109

Simply, Latin Chef is awesome. I sought it out because I spent a summer in Peru and was craving Peruvian food. Latin Chef was just what the doctor order.

The Feel

Latin Chef is a very small, casual place.

It semi-reminds me of restaurants in Peru in some ways, just in how simple it is. It's just one room plus a patio, with shelves inside stocked with Peruvian imports (Inka Cola and the like).

I love the easy-going environment, plus the prime people-watching location the patio provides.

The Food

For starters, Peruvian cuisine relies heavily on rice, potatoes, chicken, and beef. Most plates typically consist of a combination of these staples plus a few other accents.

This restaurant is actually owned by a native Peruvian, so the cooking is done right.

Both the Lomo Saltado (a plate of beef mixed with peppers and onions with a side of fries and rice) and Bistec a Lo Pobre (a steak dish served with an egg, rice, and a plantain) are delicious.

As far as finding an authentic Peruvian restaurant in San Diego, I think this might be as good as it gets. And it's pretty dang good.

Latin Chef also has a Brazilian menu but I have yet to try it out. If it's done anything like the Peruvian menu, you won't be disappointed.
