San Diego Surf Beaches

Leave your stress at home and let's go surfing! No matter what's your level of expertise, in San Diego you will find the perfect beach for you.
The beginner sufer
Choosing a good beginners beach is essential to get the most out of your training, and of course, as much fun as possible. As a newbie, you should look for a place that offers small waves that look crumbly and slow.
- Mission Beach/ Pacific Beach
This beach is one of the most popular beaches in San Diego and finding teachers and surfing partners will be easy. The beach consists of several beaches, adding up to more than two miles of great surfing opportunities.
This sandy beach is over one mile long and during the summer the waves at La Jolla Shores are usually the most gentle of all San Diego beaches. How ever, keep in mind that although the waves are moderate the rip currents may still be strong at times.
Recently discovered by “the masses”, this small beach town has still managed to keep it's relaxing and laid-back atmosphere. This also means facilities are sparse. If you want a beach with restrooms and lifeguards you should not choose Leucadia, but if you're more interested in great surfing Leucadia is the place for you.
The intermediate sufer
If you're already an experience surfer and are looking for some more adventurous places to go. I suggest you begin with checking out these two great spots.
T he Imperial Beach is very popular and well worth a visit. You don't want to leave San Diego with out trying out a beach known to have some of the most hollow tubes in the county.
This place is located within the Sunset Cliffs Natural Park. Not easy accessible, just getting into the water can be hazardous since the cliffs are jagged and the bottom rocky. But once you're there, you will have the opportunity to enjoy magnificent waves making it all worth while.
The expert sufer
This is by many considered the best of the La Jolla reef breaks. Windansea Beach is known for its shorebreak, a condition on steep beaches resulting in hard-breaking surf right at the shoreline.
Indicators is located in Sunset Cliffs Natural Park. Sunset Cliff feature numerous of surfing spots, of which the Indicator is one of the most popular among experts. The Indicators is the Cliffs' outher big wave zone, and not easy accessible. Just getting into the water can be hazardous since the cliffs are jagged and the bottom rocky.
This place is also located inside the Sunset Cliffs Natural Park. The exact location is however a well kept secret within the surfer community. Just finding out is an adventure in it self.
